What I Put In Smoothie

I drink a smoothie almost every day.  It is basically like my daily VITAMIN, because I’m not so good at remembering to take supplements.  People always ask me what I put in my smoothie, so I will post here.

I use 1/2 frozen banana. (I get bananas at the store and when they are ripe, I peel them and break them in half, then put them in a freezer bag. )

5 ice cubes (optional)

1/2 cup fresh organic berries (like 5 strawberries)

1/2 cup frozen organic berries (you can get a pound of organic raspberries/blueberries for $3.50 at trader joes)

I put 1 heaping tablespoon of chia seeds (if you don’t drink your smoothie in a short period of time, it will get thicker because of this, just fyi)

2 scoops Ultra InflammX from metagenics…this is my recent love….(if this is too expensive for you, just get a good protein powder like this one.)(create an account on iherb.com for free & use coupon code DIC339 to save $10)

1 level tablespoon green powder

1 scoop (it’ll come in the canister) of a red powder (here is one example, there are tons)

Basically add filtered water to make it the consistency that you like.  Sometimes, I add about 1/4 can of coconut milk …(did you know that you can use canned coconut milk as a creamer for tea like this yummy Tahitian Vanilla Hazelnut tea?)

*******if you’re on a major budget, Trader Joe’s has $10.99 greens powder and $19.99 red powder, as well as a decent $10.99 hemp protein powder and $0.99 light coconut milk…those are good ways to start then remember to vary powders if you get into making smoothies daily.

Another wonderful smoothie option is to make this 12 herb congee mix (cooking it is like making a big pot of soup) and then put it in freezer containers except one that you keep in the fridge.  Add one cup to morning smoothie.  That congee mix is full of nutrients that we don’t normally get in our daily diet.  I would use this Tao of Wellness High Performance powder, for congee smoothie and it was AMAZING for an energy boost.  (For women, best not to take ginseng regularly for long periods of time.)  I liked it so much that we bought it in bulk to save money.

I use the K-tec total blender (Blendtech) which is a 3 horsepower blender.  (It will pulverize the pit of an avocado, yup 12 grams of soluble fiber in that baby!).  I bought mine used 7 years ago and it’s been AMAZING.  You need Blendtech to blend the 12 herb congee, but the fruit recipe at the top should mix with any blender except the frozen banana may not get totally mashed is all.

I make a smoothie everyday to give myself nutrition that I otherwise wouldn’t get!  Be creative–write me back on what smoothie ingredients you use.

The key is to vary the content of the smoothie every 2-3 months.  I put different fruit and different powders, don’t use the same powder over and over for years, the body can develop allergies.  I have used the 12 herb congee for years at a time, that is okay, it’s the powders that you want to vary.
